Halfway through the Meridian season, the role finally stopped feeling like a mountain and started feeling like a room I live in. The first dozen shows were all stamina — verse, rapier calls, and the sheer arithmetic of a four-hour tragedy. Somewhere around show twenty, the effort dropped away and the evenings started surprising me again.

The graveyard scene now plays in near-darkness with a single lantern — the quietest moment of my career, and the one the audience remembers. No projection, no underscore, just breath and candlelight. Night after night, you could hear the whole house lean in.

“The text does the heavy lifting if you let it — my job is mostly to get out of its way.”

For the actors who write in asking how to carry verse for a full run: protect the voice, walk the fight call like it is opening night, and find one moment per show to play differently. The role stays alive only if you do.
